Energy Efficiency Ratings For HVAC Units

What Is SEER, COP, Or HSPF Rating And Why Is It Important?

Ratings help to assess the efficiency of HVAC equipment and systems for your home by measuring their output and energy efficiency. Heating and cooling professionals use these performance grading systems to determine energy usage and suitability for specific products.

A common energy efficiency rating you might notice is SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) for air conditioners, HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) for heat pumps, and COP (co-efficiency of Performance) for electric heating systems.

The units we deal with use SEER or HSPF ratings (defined in the following FAQs). The bottom line is lower energy bills through better efficiency scores.

What Is A Good SEER Rating?

SEER ratings range between 13 to 25 on the market today. The average air conditioning unit scores between 14-16 on SEER for efficiency. The higher the SEER score (20 is excellent) the more money you’ll save on your energy bill.

What Is A Good HSPF Rating?

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is an efficiency rating specifically for heat pumps. Again, the higher the score, the more efficient the heat pump, and the more money you’ll save. You should consider a heat pump with an HSPF rating in the range of 8 to 10.

What Is A Good COP Rating?

Coefficient of Performance is a metric used for measuring electric heating systems like electric furnaces or heat pumps.
A good COP rating for heat pumps begin at about 2.0 for an air source pump. For comparison, an electric heat pump furnace’s energy efficiency rating is 1.0.

How Do I Improve My Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)?

Indoor HVAC systems do more than just heat and cool. They filter particulate matter from the air caused by dust, lint, pet dander, mold particles, and smoke caused by wildfires. Improve indoor air quality with a high-efficiency air filter or purifier. We have a variety of high-efficiency air filters. For air purifiers, we recommend the Reme Halo, and AirScrubber air filtration products.

FREQUENCY OF SERVICE

How Often Should I Change My HVAC Air Filters?

Changing your air filters regularly is a good practice to adopt. If your household has pets or more occupants, you’ll need to change the air filters more frequently than if you are living alone. We recommend changing your air filters every 90 to 180 days depending on what kind of filter you have. But, during the summer with increased allergen levels and smoke, we recommend changing air filters every 30 days.

How Often Should I Get My HVAC Unit Serviced?

For optimal performance, once a year. HVAC equipment is expensive. Many electric and mechanical components work in tandem to heat, cool, and clean your air. Because of time, natural wear and tear on your unit, and weather conditions, these units need servicing after regular usage just like a vehicle does. Keep this in mind, especially if you want to extend the life of an older unit. A little maintenance goes a long way!

How Many Years Does A Furnace Last?

Most furnaces last 15 years. However, with regular servicing and maintenance appointments, we’ve seen some furnace brands last to up to 30 years.

How Many Years Does An Air Conditioner Last?

Air conditioning units vary by make and model, however, the typical lifespan for most units is 10 to 15 years. However, with regular service and maintenance appointments, we’ve seen some units last up to 25 years.

How Many Years Does a Heat Pump Last?

Heat pumps have a typical lifespan of 15 years. However, with regular maintenance and service appointments, some can last up to 25 years.

What If I Need Emergency Service?

What if my air conditioner broke on a 100-degree day or I have a safety issue related to heating or cooling with my current unit? Call us right away and describe the urgency of the issue to our service dispatch department. We will prioritize your issue as best we can and find a solution that you feel comfortable with. Don’t hesitate to call us! We don’t want you going without essential heating and cooling services in the extreme temperatures of our high desert climate.
