Custom Metal Hoods for Every Kitchen
Your kitchen deserves a statement piece that’s as functional as it is beautiful. At Bend Heating & Sheet Metal, our skilled craftsmen design and fabricate custom range hoods and custom kitchen hoods that transform ordinary kitchens into extraordinary spaces. With 70 years of sheet metal expertise serving Central Oregon, we bring your vision to life—whether you’re dreaming of a sleek stainless steel hood for a modern kitchen or a handcrafted copper range hood for a farmhouse-style design.

What Are Custom Range Hoods & Hood Shrouds?
A custom range hood is more than just a kitchen appliance—it’s a handcrafted focal point designed specifically for your space. Unlike mass-produced hoods, custom hoods are fabricated to your exact dimensions, style preferences, and functional requirements.
Range Hood vs. Hood Shroud: What’s the difference?
The range hood is the most visible part of your kitchen ventilation—it’s the statement piece you see front and center above your cooktop. The hood shroud sits above it, concealing the pipe and ductwork to create a clean, seamless look from hood to ceiling.
Both components can be custom fabricated in our Bend shop to match your kitchen’s design aesthetic, whether you’re working with an existing ventilation system or starting fresh with new construction.

Why Choose a Custom Hood for Your Home?
Central Oregon homeowners invest in custom range hoods for reasons that go beyond aesthetics:
Perfect Fit for Any Kitchen
Standard hoods come in limited sizes (30”, 36”, or 42”). Custom fabrication means we build to your exact dimensions—whether you have a 34-inch cooktop, an unusual ceiling height, or a specific clearance requirement.
Design Flexibility
From contemporary wall-mount designs to dramatic island hoods that anchor open-concept kitchens, we can fabricate any style. Choose from classic profiles or collaborate with our team on a completely unique design that reflects your design style.
Premium Materials & Finishes
Our sheet metal shop works with materials, including:
- Stainless Steel: 304-grade for durability and corrosion resistance. Available in brushed.
- Copper: Develops a beautiful patina over time. Choose a patina.
- Zinc: Silvery finish that ages to a rich blue-grey. Perfect for rustic or industrial designs.
- Brass: Warm golden tones that complement traditional and transitional kitchens.
- Custom Powder Coating: Match any color in your kitchen for a seamless, integrated look.
Increased Home Value
A custom range hood is a high-end upgrade that appeals to discerning buyers. In Central Oregon’s competitive real estate market, distinctive kitchen features help homes stand out and command more premium prices.
Our Custom Hood Fabrication Process
From initial concept to final installation, we guide you through every step, including:
1. Consultation & Design
Share your vision, inspiration photos, and kitchen specifications. Our team discusses material options, profile shapes, finishes, and decorative details (strapping, rivets, pot rails). We’ll help you understand what’s possible and recommend solutions that fit your budget.
2. Precise Measurements
We take detailed measurements of your space, including cooktop width, ceiling height, cabinet placement, and any obstacles. For hood shrouds, we’ll measure your existing insert to ensure a perfect fit.
3. Custom Fabrication
Our skilled sheet metal craftsmen fabricate your hood in our Bend shop using precision cutting, forming, welding, and finishing techniques developed over decades. Every seam, edge, and detail receives careful attention.
4. Quality Inspection
Before delivery, we inspect every hood for fit, finish, and structural integrity. We don’t ship until it’s right.
5. Delivery or Installation
Pick up your completed hood from our shop, or let our team handle professional installation. We coordinate with your contractor or kitchen designer to ensure seamless integration with cabinetry and ventilation systems.
Popular Hood Styles We Fabricate
Our versatile fabrication capabilities allow us to create virtually any hood style:

Wall-Mount Range Hoods
The most common residential installation. This type of hood attaches directly to the wall above your cooktop with a vent shroud that runs to the ceiling or connects to ductwork vented outside the building. This hood type is for traditional kitchen layouts with the range against a wall.

Island Range Hoods
Under-cabinet hoods are space-efficient and mount beneath existing cabinetry. Custom fabrication ensures a seamless fit that looks intentional.

Under-Cabinet Hoods

Alcove & Range Niche Hoods
This type of hood is integrated into custom cabinetry or built-in range alcoves for a seamless, high-end appearance. The hood truly becomes part of the architecture.
Hood Sizing Guide
Proper hood sizing ensures effective ventilation and visual balance. Here are some guidelines you can use when planning your custom hood:
Width
Your hood should be at least as wide as your cooktop. For optimal smoke and grease capture, we recommend 3-6 inches wider on each side. A 30-inch range works best with a 36-42 inch hood.
Height
Mount the bottom of your hood 24-30 inches above the cooking surface (24-27 inches for gas ranges, 24-30 inches for electric). The overall hood height depends on your ceiling height and desired proportions.
Depth
The hood should cover at least the front half of your cooktop’s front burners. Standard depth is 20-25 inches, matching most residential ranges.
CFM Requirements
Ventilation power is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). For residential kitchens: 300-400 CFM for light cooking, 600-900 CFM for regular use, and 900-1200+ CFM for high-heat cooking or professional-style ranges. Note: Hoods over 400 CFM may require make-up air per building codes.
Decorative Details & Custom Features
You can personalize your hood with decorative elements that match your kitchen’s style:
- Metal Strapping: Bands of contrasting metal, such as copper straps on stainless, brass on copper, to add visual interest and rustic character
- Decorative Rivets: Functional and ornamental fasteners in copper, brass, or iron
- Pot Rails: Built-in bars for hanging utensils or towels
- Textured Finishes: Hammered, brushed, distressed, or patina treatments
- Mixed Metals: Combine materials for unique, layered designs, such as a brushed stainless body with brass accents

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does custom hood fabrication take?
Most custom hoods are completed in 3-6 weeks after final design approval, depending on complexity, finish, and current shop workload. We’ll provide a specific timeline during your consultation.
Do you install the ventilation insert, or just the hood/shroud?
We can do both. For complete range hoods, we’ll source and install the ventilation system. For shrouds, you provide the insert, and we fabricate the decorative cover to fit. We also coordinate with electricians for wiring and can modify existing ductwork, if needed.
Can you match my existing kitchen finishes?
Absolutely. Bring us a sample, color code, or photo of what you’re matching. Our powder coating options cover virtually any color, and we can achieve various metal finishes through polishing, brushing, and patina treatments.
What’s the difference between ducted and ductless hoods?
Ducted (vented) hoods exhaust air outside through ductwork—the most effective option for removing smoke, grease, and odors. Ductless (recirculating) hoods filter air and return it to the kitchen.
Do I need a permit for a new range hood?
In most cases, no permit is required for a direct replacement. However, if you’re adding new ductwork, modifying electrical, or installing a hood over 400 CFM (which requires make-up air), permits may be necessary. We’ll advise you during the consultation.
